ESA Seeks Submissions For New Drought & Water-Ecosystem Services Collection

November 9, 2009

EcoEd Digital Library is debuting a new Drought & Water-Ecosystem Services Collection in conjunction with the first Millennium Conference, which is is covering the theme "Water-Ecosystem Services, Drought & Environmental Justice." Do you have photographs, figures, tables, data, video, or activities that could be used to teach ecological topics related to drought? We encourage you to add to the collection!

In order to be peer reviewed and published in the special collection, we must receive your submission by January 15, 2010. We welcome additional teaching contributions after the deadline for inclusion in the general collection. Please see the current resources for models to follow and feel free to contact us if what you have in mine doesn't fit any of the existing resource types.

Suggested topics relevant to drought include:

  • The mechanisms and processes of drought as a normal, recurrent feature of climate.
  • Patterns and variability in vulnerability to drought across regions and climatic zones.
  • Impacts of drought that are affected by water resource infrastructure, policy, and human behavior.
  • Biophysical and socioeconomic changes affecting drought, especially in North American ecosystems.
  • Direct and indirect ecosystem services that are impacted by drought.
  • Vulnerability of human communities to economic changes caused by drought.
  • Differences in exposure to drought-related environmental hazards and access to water for household and agricultural needs relative to the racial, ethnic, and income composition of human communities.
  • Ecological dimensions of public decision-making about water and drought.

Each image or activity submission requires some descriptive information to be considered for publication in the library. All EcoEd DL submissions are peer reviewed for scientific accuracy, and classroom activities are also reviewed for pedagogical use. The author guidelines and review criteria provided on the EcoEd DL website (see Submission Information) outline the requirements for different kinds of submissions.

Review of submissions

All submitted items are peer reviewed and selected for scientific accuracy, instructional value, and visual quality. The information (metadata) provided with each submission is important for ecology educators searching for resources and deciding how to use them effectively in their courses. Therefore, both the resource and its corresponding descriptions are required for a submission to be complete.

New submissions are reviewed by two anonymous reviewers. You may submit a resource at any time. If you have any questions as you prepare a submission, please contact us.
