Submission Information for EcoEd Digital Library

Call for submissions

We invite ecologists and science educators to submit teaching resources that can be used to teach ecological concepts at the undergraduate level. We are currently accepting photographs, figures, tables, and classroom activities for peer review. Each submission requires some descriptive information to be considered for publication in the library. The author guidelines and review criteria linked below outline the requirements for different kinds of submissions. If you have a resource you would like to submit that does not fit into one of the types listed here, please contact us. We're developing criteria for new resource types and your resource might fit a type we're reviewing on a more selective basis while we refine the criteria.

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and are sent out for review once a month.
(There is one exception: Submissions received in July will be reviewed in August).

  • Collections of photographs

  • If you have numerous photographs you would like to submit, we ask that you choose a few photographs from your collection and write those up for submission. Author expertise is a more limiting factor for submissions than the availability of photographs. We would really appreciate any time you can put into writing up a few photographs and submitting them to us, especially if the photographs represent a part of ecology you're particularly familiar with. If you have a collection and aren't interested in writing the photographs up yourself, but you wouldn't mind with faculty volunteers write them up, please contact us.

  • We would also welcome any ecologists willing to write up photograph descriptions to help us build up our catalog of images that can be used in ecology classes. Your time and knowledge make you our most valuable resource! Please contact us and let us know if you're considering writing up certain image subjects, since we can direct you toward some public domain image sources and let you know what the library already has in development for that subject area.

Review of submissions

All submitted items are peer reviewed and selected for scientific accuracy, instructional value, and visual quality. The information (metadata) provided with each submission is important for ecology educators searching for resources and deciding how to use them effectively in their courses. Therefore, both the resource and its corresponding descriptions are required for a submission to be complete.

New submissions are reviewed by two anonymous reviewers. You may submit a resource at any time. We will add any resources submitted between review periods to the queue for review during the next review period. If you have any questions as you prepare a submission, please contact us.

 

Copyright Information

Materials submitted must be original works or copyright free. Copyright of the materials will remain with the author, and ESA agrees to give authors appropriate credit in all ESA reproductions, copies, and publications of the materials. ESA members are encouraged to peruse their private collections of teaching and learning resources. Individuals submitting materials for EcoEd DL must attest that the materials are original and that they hold/own the copyright. ESA requires prospective authors to grant ESA the nonexclusive world rights to reproduce and/or distribute materials included in EcoEd Digital Library. This arrangement permits authors to retain the copyright to the materials so that they may republish or otherwise use these materials.
